Product Development Background

Product Development Background

Equipped as the standard on the Honda S2000 CR (North America) and the Type-S (Japan), this spoiler is the only model that provides significant performance gains and benefits for a S2000.

According to Honda's aerodynamic testing data, the OEM CR/ Type-S spoilers reduce the lift by approximately 80% compared to the stock configuration without the spoiler.

There are two aspects of the spoiler that leave something to be desired for more. First, the spoiler size should be longer, and second, it should be mounted higher.

But, would Honda have designed it without careful consideration? The size and height of the OEM CR/Type-S spoiler were likely determined after extensive testing.

Yet, there is one key factor that may have been overlooked by us.  While the U.S. version was sold with a hardtop having the soft top deleted, the Japanese version retained the soft top, preserving the open-air driving experience.

In other words, the height and size of the spoiler were likely designed and optimized with open-air driving in mind, meaning there could be potential for better performance with the airflow over the hardtop.

While differences in vehicle design mean this isn’t always the case, it is known that the highest downforce from a spoiler is typically generated when it is mounted near the height of the car’s roof.

When the airflow passes over the windshield, across the roof, and down the rear window, a spoiler in near height of the roof can redirect that airflow path before turbulence forms, generating more downforce.
